Fran Healy in South Sudan

Fran Healy, lead singer of Travis and Band Aid 20 soloist, has just returned from South Sudan with Save the Children. Fran saw the reality of life for children and their families in one of Africa's poorest countries and the kind of project work that money raised by Band Aid can fund through charities like Save the Children.

Fran said: "I felt as though the Band Aid record didn't really have a context. All the media hype had been about us musicians coming together to re-record the single. I thought that maybe somebody should go out to Sudan to highlight what's happening out there and to give an example of where all the money is going. I spoke to Midge Ure and Bob Geldof and they both thought it was a good idea to go out. Midge had been back to Ethiopia with Save the Children in September, which had kicked off the whole Band Aid 20 thing, so he suggested I contact them about it.”

Paul Hetherington of Save the Children, who traveled with Fran, said "Fran really wanted to put the issues affecting Africa into the public eye”.

Charity single Band Aid 20 is this year’s Christmas number one, outselling its nearest rivals by five to one. The success of the single will raise much needed funds for the people of Sudan, but could have a much wider impact.

Save the Children director-general Mike Aaronson, has said of the single, “It mustn't stop at a Band Aid, It has to turn into a bandwagon - a bandwagon that's going to roll for Africa and put an end to the injustice and poverty that we see there."

Next year will be pivotal in the fight against poverty in Africa. The Commission for Africa, which Tony Blair set up to look at new solutions for the continent, will report back in the spring. The UK will also host the G8 meeting of rich country leaders and then becomes President of the EU. Save the Children will be at the forefront of the fight to make 2005 is great for children.
